President Wayne Finley called the January 4, 2012 meeting to order at 6 pm. The minutes of the Dec. 7, 2010 meeting were read and approved. Jaime Abbess read the December treasurer’s report for Linda Ramirez, who was unable to attend. The report stated there was $ 400; Wayne Finley thought there was $405. The discrepancy will be investigated and reported on at the February meeting. The interim report was approved.
The president’s report suggested ideas for increased membership be pursued. Wayne made a motion that a small gift from the Friends (FMLL) to Elaine Birkinshaw for her retirement be a book dedicated in her name of her choice to the library was agreed upon. The motion was seconded and approved.
Wendy Bennett agreed to contact Stetson Law to ask if they would make it a class project to determine our status for a humanities grant. Wayne Finley will contact Wells Fargo and PNC Banks about underwriting grants to digitize the documents concerning Mirror Lake Library’s origin and founding. A Carnegie impersonator is another item the grant may fund.
March 7, 2012 is the proposed date for our first “event” in 2012; possibly with Terry Tomalin of the TAMPA BAY TIMES. We will assist him to sell his latest book. Wendy suggested we have a raffle again and this time limit it to new members only.
The group next discussed additional ideas to encourage new members including our library postcards to adjacent neighborhoods (Diane volunteered to address the postcards), booth at the Downtown Market and forms attached to new library card requests.
Wayne reported that he had found another Mirror Lake Library in Alaska and proposed making it a “sister” library.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:55 pm.
